With the closure of the office in Brazil, X’s employees will no longer be there. However, Brazilians will continue to use the platform as before.
Social media platform X has shut down its operations in Brazil. The company’s CEO Elon Musk gave this information on Saturday (August 17). He blamed the Supreme Court’s censorship order behind the decision. However, X’s services for the people of Brazil will continue as before.
Musk wrote on X – Due to (illegal) secret censorship and demands to hand over private information by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, we have decided to close the X office in Brazil. This decision was difficult, but we had no way to explain our actions without embarrassment.
According to Al Jazeera’s report, the company’s decision comes after a legal battle with Justice Moraes over the platform’s rights and responsibilities to prevent misinformation. X claims that Alexandre Moraes also threatened to have one of its legal representatives in Brazil arrested.
Musk announced the closure of X’s operations in Brazil at 10:34 pm on Saturday (August 17).
The company said – we are being intimidated and threatened
X’s Global Government Affairs team informed about Alexandre de Moraes’ threats through a post on its official account. The company said that Moraes had made the threat in a secret order, which X has now shared.
The company said that instead of complying with the law, Moraes threatened and intimidated its employees in Brazil. Moraes told a legal representative of the company that he would be arrested if he did not remove certain content from X.
X alleged that our several appeals in the Supreme Court were not heard. Therefore, we have decided to close our operations in Brazil with immediate effect for the safety of our employees. However, there has been no response from Justice Alexandre of the Supreme Court of Brazil to X’s allegations so far.
Musk had demanded the removal of the Brazilian judge
On April 7, Elon Musk demanded the removal of Brazil’s Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes. Musk had said that the judge should resign or the government should impeach him and remove him.
Moraes had ordered X to block the accounts of some influential personalities. If this is not done, he threatened to cut off access and impose a fine. The judge said that Musk is using X as a criminal instrument. After this, Musk started attacking the judge by posting one after the other from his handle.
Musk said- The judge betrayed the people Musk wrote in the post- ‘X will soon publish what Alexandre has demanded and how it violates Brazilian law. This judge has shamelessly and repeatedly betrayed the Brazilian constitution and people. He should resign or be impeached. ‘Shame on you Alexandre, shame on you.’
Musk said, X will publish everything Alexandre asks for.
Elon Musk said- principles matter more than profits
In another post, Musk wrote, ‘De Moraes is threatening to impose huge fines and cut off access to X from Brazil. With this, we will probably lose all revenue in Brazil and will have to close our office there, but principle matters more than profit.’
The accounts of the former president’s supporters were blocked
The Supreme Court of Brazil had launched an investigation against X accusing him of ‘obstructing justice by spreading misinformation’. After this, some accounts were also blocked. Most of these celebrities were supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
However, X reactivated all these accounts. Alexandre de Moraes had ordered these accounts to be blocked or censored, but X refused to do so.
The 38th President of Brazil was declared ineligible in the 2023 elections
Brazilian politician and retired army officer Jair Messias Bolsonaro served as the 38th President of Brazil from 2019 to 2022. The Moraes-led TSE accused Bolsonaro of spreading misinformation about Brazil’s electoral system and disqualified him from running in the 2023 election.
