The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leveraging the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) to secure political support from government employees by offering a pension of 50% of salary with inflation adjustments. This move counters the Congress’s promise to reinstate the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), especially as key assembly elections approach in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand. The Congress’s OPS proposal previously resonated with government employees in Himachal Pradesh, influencing the state’s recent elections. Despite this, the BJP retained significant victories in Madhya Pradesh and other states.
The UPS, which took 18 months to finalize, was announced strategically ahead of elections. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw criticized the Congress for failing to implement OPS despite its campaign promises, calling it an “illusion.” He emphasized that the UPS, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, is a fully-funded scheme designed for sustainability and fairness, contrasting it with Congress’s inconsistent stance. Political analysts view the BJP’s move as a tactic to reassure government employees and mitigate opposition strategies that have previously gained traction.
